The Great Outdoors in the Balearics

Information on the facilities in Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera for outdoors activities: walks, hikes and cycling activities in the area.
  • The Balearic islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera are situated in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsular
  • Mallorca is the largest of the archipelago. The island encompasses two mountainous regions (in the north-western and eastern thirds of the island), plains and coastline. It has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild, cool winters. There is higher precipitation on the mountains in the west
  • Menorca was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in October 1993. It is known for its large collection of megalithic stone monuments, vestiges of prehistoric human activity
  • Ibiza has a Mediterranean climate with milder winters (15º C) and slightly cooler summers than Majorca. The hot season lasts from June to September with temperatures often reaching 30º C, very little rain and a lot of sunshine. Large portions of Ibiza are registered as UN World Heritage sites
  • Located approximately 6 Km south of Ibiza, Formentera is 19 Km long and comprises one municipality. Quieter than the other three islands until recent times, it is now becoming a popular holiday destination

Below is information on the different natural parks in the Balearics, and an overview of outdoor activities: hiking and walking, cycling and mountain biking, climbing, water sports and horse riding available in Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

Walking & Hiking

Mallorca

The range of terrain in Mallorca makes it an ideal location for walking and hiking. There are four main hiking routes around the island. These include:

Menorca

Punta Nati - Cala Morell: This medium-difficulty trail begins in Punta Nati and follows Minorca's northern coastline, passing through several coves before reaching the Cala Morell village. Hikers can visit the beaches of Cala Pous and Cala Morts, the prehistoric caves of Cala Morell, the dune-beaches of Tancats and des Bots and the Cabo Cavalleria lighthouse. Punta Nati can be reached by a road that starts in northern Ciutadella, where it is possible to park.

Ibiza

Sant Josep - Sa Talaia: Starting in the village of Sant Josep, this medium-difficulty trail climbs up to Sa Talaia, one of the highest points in Ibiza. Places and things of interest along the trail are the rural Punic-Roman settlement of Ses Paises de Cala d'Hort, the typical Ibizan folkdance that takes place in Sant Josep de sa Talaia, the tower of es Savinar and the tiny Chapel of d'en Serra.

Formentera

On Formentera, hikers can follow the signposted Green Routes listed in the leaflet published by the Formentera City Council.
