Cheaper telecom provider...

I've just changed from Telefonica to Ono, being led to believe that I could still keep my previous cheaper supplier for calls to the UK (where I simply prefixed 4 digits before dialling). Now I find that this is not possible. I used to use Fairtel and Elektek prefixes, also Telitec tell me they can't do it, and I can't find contact numbers for the first companies anyway. Ono customer service is practically non- existent, I know they have a scheme where you pay a flat rate per month and then get cheaper calls to UK, however if I'm not out here for 3 months or so in succession, no point in that because any advantages are eaten up by the fixed cost. ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE, or am I stuffed into a useless 18-month contract (which includes a very poor and expensive "broadband" service) ?
Hopefully when Ono have pulled their finger out (it's taken months so far) they have promised to port my old number back to me, but I assume that as it would still be on their system, they still have this right to ban other telecoms providers.

I realise that Telitec advertise a UK rate on mobiles around 6 cents a minute to UK, but they add a swingeing connection fee too, so short calls are pricey.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions (that are printable!). Thanks. Steve Riches.

Hi Steve,

If you have broadband provided here by ONO then I would suggest using Skype from your computer to call the uk. I us it all the time for business, it is very reliable and good quality, better still, if you happen to be calling someone in the UK who has or can have Skype installed on their computer, you can call and video call for free for as long as you like.

Google Skype, download, away you go, Mark

A ridiculously simple solution that I should have thought of! My previous 2 tries at Skype from a different location gave me massive downoad problems, and my friends with Skype ferequently get terrible sound quality problems with it, but that's not to say it won 't work for me in Mallorca so I'll try it. Maybe someone can advise on the best hardware for me to get?

Give me a call 628 22 19 77 and I can discuss it with you, it's easier than trying to do it over the forum

If you have a good internet connection there should be no problem with skype. Most laptops now have good built in mikes and the call quality is generally ok.

Skype works by turning your voice into a digital packet, sending it down the line and the turning it back into sound again so the better the equipment the better the call quality.

You can buy good usb phones for about 15 euors that will generally give you as good as a fixed line with skype.
